Chapter 9

Teaching and Learning

It is well known for many teachers that the current approach for education is Learning Centered, leaving out very important teachers' matters, which had been the central part of the former "Teacher Center Approach". However they both have in common a very important issue in any type of personal relationship: "Feedback".

In my opinion, what happens most of the times is that when looking for the truth is taken as a race where everybody competes and everything mentioned by my opponent is wrong. Politicians do it; the Parties do it; and Researchers do it. They all forget that what happens in a classroom involves teachers as well as students. Feedback and everything that happens in a classroom affects and is necessary for both Teachers and Learners.

Finally, it is important to care about learners need, I agree, but teachers do not perform great classes when they are overloaded with problems, and they certainly have problems when schools overprotect students and leave the whole responsibility to teachers. To create a balance and to take the best things of both "Teaching and Learning" is in my opinion what we (Teachers and students) need. Let's remember that when approaches were teachers centered students did not behave so badly.

  1. You are really right! We are all involved in the process of teaching- learning but the problem is that the authorities try to ignore that. In this moment a Big Reform has been announced but the teacher`s opinions are not valid. So the improvement is not going to happen if we are not consider. So much theory is not enough...

  2. I agree. Nowadays teachers are overlooked for so many people and it's not difficult for students to realize that. Students are able to hear sometimes their parents opinions (not always good opinions of course) and they have access to the news, the internet and are exposed to the different problems teachers are facing.
The government is implementing a new education policy and they don't care about teachers' opinions about it, so of course it's difficult sometimes that students respect our work.

  3. I agree, everybody talks about student´s needs, interests, etc. but no one thinks about us, teachers, our thoughts or necessities. what we have to say it´s really important because we are one of the main characters of education.

  4. yes, you can see this everywhere, not only at schools but at institutes and universities also.Teachers are forced to use coursebooks that are not suitable and in addition to this they are expected to include ESP also with the same amount of hours only 4 pedagogical hours a week. According to the institutions improvements should be done but nobody cares about teachers' opinion

  5. Your last sentence seems you want to say that discipline has to do with teacher or student centered approaches and I do not agree with you on that.
I personally think that students behaviour has to do with how much they are involved in your classes as well as how much you as a teacher are.
It´s true that nowadays students have more freedom at schools which unfortunately has become in some cases an abuse from part of the same students. However, I think that student centered or teacher centered approaches have nothing to do with disciplinary behaviours.
